What is the relationship of reason to faith?

“Faith is not that suicidal rigid sacrifice of the intellect for which it is often mistaken; it does not imply the denial of the intellect as such, but only its limitation and control. But it is precisely this limitation which reason, or rather the rational man, does not like. Reason wishes to remain the supreme court of appeal. Reason does not wish to acknowledge the judgment passed on it by a unique fact. The will and pride of reason rebel against faith ….. The strongest reason for the hostility of the modern man to the Christian religion of revelation is this: he has gained such overweening confidence in his own reason, that is, in the unbroken character of his own existence.”
