John Stott wanted to present a Christian faith for the wholeness of life. Summarizing such a theology is a challenging task. Ted Schroder succeeds very well in reproducing the essential elements of Stott’s thinking. This book corresponds to its title.

This summary does not primarily contain a statement of points but manages to render an exciting reasoning. The reader is introduced to the special features of Stott’s texts, such as his paradoxes but also his well-founded convictions of the truth.

As a young curate, Schroder had convinced Stott of the importance of radical contextualization. In the book there are interesting notices about the contacts with Stott during his life. The author really knows his subject both as a friend and as a theologian.

Although I have spent a lot of time researching Stott’s theology for a doctoral thesis and later a book (in Swedish), I myself have found new knowledge in this book. Schroder has not lost his way in the amount of thoughts but is a safe guide through an exciting theological landscape.

PRESS RELEASE – 17 JUNE 2021 11:30

Solid portrait of one of the great theologians of the 20th century

John Stott was one of the most important theologians and leaders of the evangelical Christianity of the 20th century. Theol. dr. Per-Axel Sverker has written a dissertation on John Stott and describes in the book The words of salvation to the world of change the great importance John Stott still has today.

– Stott’s theology has helped generations of Christians around the world to understand, believe and shape the gospel in their day. His contribution to the worldwide Church is very great. In this book, I gather my studies of Stott’s theology and deepen them with insights from both postmodern and Pentecostal challenges, says Per-Axel Sverker.

The evangelical theologian John Stott has been considered one of the Church Fathers of the 20th century. His theology has shaped the faith and lives of millions of people. By focusing on the central position of the Bible and the cross, he has revitalized the worldwide evangelical movement. The view of the Bible and the doctrine of salvation are therefore the main issues in this book. It also describes how Stott presented theology in the modern context. Stott was concerned about a holistic view of the Christian faith with an interest in both the Bible and the world. In a final chapter, a comparison is made with postmodern and Pentecostal thinking.

John Stott worked as a preacher and writer, as a theologian and ecumenical organizer. By 2021, Stott would have turned 100 years old, and this book, The Word of Salvation to the World of Change: The Bible and the Gospel in John Stott’s Theology , should be seen against this whole background.

John Stott first worked as a priest in London but later as a lecturer in over a hundred countries. He was a driving force behind a number of organizations, including the Lausanne movement. His influence was based on books in millions of editions but also on a personal character in simplicity and humility.

Per-Axel Sverker is a theol.dr. and a well-known Bible teacher in several communities. His activities have included both teaching in pastoral education and on parish weekends. Sverker has a doctorate in a dissertation on John Stott’s theology.
